I bet if you asked a good mix of people what their biggest fears or most worried about skincare woes were, scars would be up there. They’re nothing to be ashamed of of course, no matter how they got there, but we’re all a little self-conscious when it comes to scaring.
Over the years, it’s been easy to listen to the raves and try out different things, but do they work? Hmm, I’m honestly not too sure. Sometimes I’ve felt like lines have slightly faded, but they never really seem to go and while I don’t believe in miracles (after all, a scar is called a scar for a reason), I honestly thought I’d see some improvement.
Whether its acne, accidents or operations, they’re definitely hard to shift and it can be far more than taxing trying to find a product that works – especially when you think of the time, hope and money that can go into that long and frustrating search.
So, with that in mind, I thought I’d give Mederma’s Advanced Scar Gel a go. Cracking this little beauty is a big deal for me. Trying to see if it’s as good as they say, after all the hype is really all I’m after. But enough of that, let’s get to it shall we…

Mederma, what’s it all about?
On the surface, it seems like your typical cream that promises wonders and why wouldn’t we all initially think that, but after a little research, reading the reviews and giving it a go, I’m not so sure. This one could be something special.
The team behind Mederma have gone through extensive research and clinical trials to prove that the formula (that comes in a gel form, not a cream – hurrah!) does improve the three main issues with scars – the colour, the texture and the overall appearance. Generally a 36% improvement to be exact, within an eight week period.
Reassuringly, I also spotted that the brand suggests more doctors and pharmacists recommend the Advanced Scar Gel than any other scars for both new and older scars! Now that’s saying something – a brand can’t just claim that, it’s got to be true in order to promote it and if the pros are saying it’s really that good, I couldn’t not give it the benefit of the doubt, could I?
Not just for injury or surgery based scaring, it’s good to know that this stuff is proven on burns and acne scaring too – two of the most self-esteem knocking scars out there! With that in mind, it was worth seeing what the Advanced Scar Gel could do for me.
And how is it meant to work?
Quite simply, you use it just once a day and that’s it. The time frame that the team recommend you use it for can vary. Suggesting a gentle application, it can take between three and six months on existing scars but only eight weeks for new one. But, they say you should expect to see some improvement from four weeks onwards.
Just to clarify, they’re classing new scars as ones that new skin have just formed over – so when no scabs or stitches are left, which can be generally around two weeks after the injury or surgery. Not bad huh! With acne, this just means that the spots have heeled and the skin is no longer broken – then you can get to work.
And if you’re worried about getting through the gel way quicker than you want to be, Mederma recommend using just a teeny thing layer. As long as there’s no wet or sticky feeling left, you’re good! If the skin has started to flake or dry out, then you’re definitely using too much – so a little goes a really long way here.
So, what’s the skinny?
I just have to start by saying that it definitely does what it says on the tin in terms of application and processes – you really don’t have to use a ton of this product at all. It’s a clear gel and easy to use. Applying a teeny amount of the gel is clean and simple. It even smells okay which is always a big indicator for me. Using a product that has an awful smell eventually puts me off, especially having to use it for weeks or months on end!
Applying it to both acne scaring and a recent burn I have from cooking, it wasn’t long before I could notice a difference. I’d say around the one month mark. My skin started to look smoother on the scar and much more like the rest of my skin. With the acne, it was definitely fading, but I knew I’d need to keep up the application for this to work as well.
And what are others saying?
If that’s not all, I’ve got together a couple of other bits of feedback from real people that have given Mederma a go too. Just in case you’re worried about skin types and different characteristics changing results, here’s some diversity …
“I hadn’t really done anything for it over the years until I came across Mederma® and now I’ve seen great results. Even though it was an older scar, after using Mederma® Advanced Scar Gel for three months or so, it went from something people noticed all the time to something you wouldn’t notice it much at all unless you were really close to it.” – Jason, surgery scar
“I started using Mederma® about four years ago. First I used Mederma® Advanced Scar Gel for my C-section scar when I had my first child and it helped my scar very much. The way they cut me was kind of odd and my bathing suit wasn’t really covering it. But now you can’t even notice it when I go to the beach.” – Tracey, c-section
Overall, what’s the verdict?
To put it short, I have nothing bad to say – which is a hugely great sign. It did improve the overall look and feel of my scaring as well as the texture and helping with blending in to my natural skin tone. So, if you’re looking for a produce for scar improvement but haven’t tried Mederma’s Advanced Scar Gel, then get to it!
